Description - Our Sound Blocker premium underlayment features a unique fold out design that gives it a higher tensile strength and better crush resistance. This foam underlay is very easy to install and comes with an attached aluminum vapor barrier. This underlayment can be used under all floors, but is great under floating floors such as laminate and engineered wood floors. Resistant to moisture, mold and mildew, and bacterial growth makes this the underlay great in areas that may have water issues. Sound Blocker features a lifetime warranty and is approved over radiant heating.
Material - Sound Blocker is comprised of closed celled EVA foam with an aluminum vapor barrier.
Width - 3-1/2 feet wide per roll.

Recommended Uses - Sound Blocker can be installed in any area of your home or business and is great under bamboo flooring, laminate flooring, hardwood flooring, LVT, LVP, engineered wood flooring, cork flooring, rubber flooring, tile, and much more.

Installation of our Sound Blocker underlayment is very easy and commonly done by our customers. Installation of this underlay is as follows.
  • Clean subfloor checking to make sure it is clear of any debris including nails by either sweeping or vacuuming.
  • From the corner of the room start to roll out the underlay with the aluminum on the bottom.
  • Radiant Heat: Install with aluminum foil on top for radiant heat and the recommended temperature is at or below 82° F.
  • It is recommended to lay the underlayment perpendicular to your floor installation.
  • Where moisture is evident, install vapor barrier tape to seam all seams that are not sealed by our self seal system.
  • Roll out a second roll of underlayment and butt the seams together with built-in self-seal tape and push down to adhere foam.
  • Tape the underlayment seams with a moisture resistant tape. Note: When installing underlayment in a basement or where a moisture barrier is required, we recommend extending the underlay 1-2" up the sides of all walls.
  • Continue installing the underlay repeating the previous steps until the floor is completed.

  • Why foam underlayment?
 

Sound Blocker foam underlayment is a wonderfully affordable underlay product that provides some sound dampening qualities. This inexpensive solution can be used underneath any floor surface, but may not be idea in situations where you need to add a lot of height, as you are limited on options for thickness. Foam underlay provides excellent moisture protection, is mold and mildew resistant, and is easy to install, however, may not provide the ideal sound resistance compared to other underlay types.

Do I REALLY need underlay?

Underlayment is an amazing invention created by the flooring gods out of necessity. Underlay has an impressive list of benefits, including: adding warmth to your floors so your feet aren’t so cold on new tile flooring, adding comfort and a slight ‘give’ underneath wood or vinyl floors, reduced sound transmission (great for houses with noisy teenagers!), as well as reducing in room step noise. The image to the left is a very simplified example of using underlayment versus not using it, but as you can see the benefits greatly outweigh any reason not to.

Foam underlays are incredibly versatile, since they do not contain any materials that could leak and stain a flooring surface. Foam is the perfect underlay option for virtually any floor, including underneath laminates, vinyl, engineered wood, cork, and bamboo. For tile flooring, a different type of underlayment is typically recommended.

Thickness

  • What does it mean?
 

Foam underlayments are typically around 2mm or 3 mm thick. If adding height to your floor is important to your installation, we recommend choosing another product type such as rubber or cork, which come in substantially thicker options for your needs.

IIC / STC Ratings

  • What do they mean?
 

IIC stands for Impact Insulation Class, which refers to impact sounds such as shoes hitting the ground, dropping a cell phone, or other scenarios where something it dropped or impacts the floor. STC stands for Sound Transmission Class, which refers to any audible noise (not an impact) such as music playing aloud, a conversation, or a loud television, for example. With both of these ratings systems, the higher the number rating is for the underlayment, the better it will suppress sound, and the quieter a room will be. You may want to pay close attention to these ratings when shopping for underlayment if sound reduction is important to you.

I am building music /media room above existing bedroom. Would your, 'Sound Blocker Underlayment' work equally well (for STC), placed on studded walls prior to sheetrock being installed?

The STC rating is for transfer for 6” Concrete transfer. We have not tested it as it travels through walls or sheetrock which have a different density and sound travels different.
