Description - Our 5mm pre-cut rubber underlayment offers superior sound insulation at the best price. 5mm rubber underlayment has been shown to outperform all leading forms of underlayment including 12mm cork and 12mm foam. Rubber is great to use in areas that are at and above grade and is a great underlayment in areas where water may be present. This flooring underlayment is also mold and mildew resistant which is due to the fact that rubber does not hold water. This sound proofing underlayment can also be installed directly over concrete or wood and does not have to be adhered to the system via adhesive. You can also float the underlayment in a free floating assembly.
Material - Comprised of 100% recycled material.
Width - 4 feet wide per roll.
Length - Our pre-cut rubber underlayment comes in 25’ lengths.
Thickness - 5mm (Approx. 3/16”).
Weight - 0.83lbs./sqft.

Recommended Uses - Our 5mm rubber underlayment offers a solid surface underneath flooring surfaces, and is a popular choice for hard surfaces such as hardwoods and natural stone. But it has also been successfully used under luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and plank, ceramic tile, laminate, engineered wood, real wood, marble, brick, pavers, parquet, carpet and tiles. Rubber Underlayment

  • Why rubber underlayment?

Rubber underlayment offers superior sound resistance, is versatile and resilient. Comprised of recycled materials, this environmentally friendly product provides cushion underfoot as well as reducing sound transmission and impact sound such as footsteps. Amazingly, a 2mm thick rubber underlayment has similar testing numbers in sound resistance as compared to a 6mm thick cork underlayment.

Do I REALLY need underlay?

  • Yes, most definitely.

Underlayment is an amazing invention created by the flooring gods out of necessity. Underlay has an impressive list of benefits, including: adding warmth to your floors so your feet aren’t so cold on new tile flooring, adding comfort and a slight ‘give’ underneath wood or vinyl floors, reduced sound transmission (great for houses with noisy teenagers!), as well as reducing in room step noise. The image to the left is a very simplified example of using underlayment versus not using it, but as you can see the benefits greatly outweigh any reason not to.

Making your house a home

  • Products that work together

A favorite for use with hard plastic garage tiles, hardwood flooring and stone floor tiles. Rubber underlayment should never be used with vinyl flooring, VCT, or linoleum flooring as it could potentially stain these materials.

Thickness

  • What does it mean?

Underlayment with a thickness of up to 5mm thick are great when it comes to residential or commercial use, with all flooring types. When you get to more than 5mm thick, these are really great for installations where you need to add thickness to match up with an adjoining/existing floor surface.

IIC / STC Ratings

  • What do they mean?

IIC stands for Impact Insulation Class, which refers to impact sounds such as shoes hitting the ground, dropping a cell phone, or other scenarios where something it dropped or impacts the floor. STC stands for Sound Transmission Class, which refers to any audible noise (not an impact) such as music playing aloud, a conversation, or a loud television, for example. With both of these ratings systems, the higher the number rating is for the underlayment, the better it will suppress sound, and the quieter a room will be. You may want to pay close attention to these ratings when shopping for underlayment if sound reduction is important to you.

Customer Questions & Answers

Don't see what you're looking for?
Would the 5mm work in a wall as a sound barrier? I plan to sandwich it between two layers of sheetrock.
Our 5mm Pre-Cut Rubber Underlayment can be used as a wall sound barrier between sheetrock.
Can any of your rubber underlayment can be used with heating floors? (for example, the underlay would be directly on concrete floor in the basement, with electric heating mat over the underlay and laminate floor on top) Thank you!
All of our underlayments can be used with heated floors.
Can this be used under foam tiles without applying adhesive? I want to use this in my hallway under some 5/8" foam tiles I purchased and over existing hardwood flooring.
We would not recommend using this directly over hardwood flooring. Please note that putting any flooring over hardwood can be damaging to the hardwood.
how much sqft does one roll cover?
Each roll is 4' wide x 25' long, covering 100 square feet total.
Hi!! I am looking for 100 % recycled anti skid rubber material approx 5mm thick for a mat.
Our 5mm Pre-Cut Rubber Underlayment is 100% recycled, but is not the best material for a mat. We do offer a wide range of mats that are also recycled. Depending on what you are wanting to do on the mat, determines which one would be appropriate for you. All of our rubber mats are anti-skid and can be found on our Rubber Mats page.

  Buffalo in the Attic!
Self-installed in Attic Apartment
from Tennessee wrote...
We have a 1920's home. We asked the last tenant to move out of our attic apartment because, although she was a model tenant (she kept it pristine and paid her rent in a timely manner), she sounded like a buffalo pounding the floor above our heads. I couldn't bear it another year. We did our research and here is what we did. We took out the floor including the sub-floor. Then we installed everything new, with the rubber underlayment as one of the steps. We installed porcelain tile and 3/4" hardwood floor. Although I can hear an occasional sound if something is dropped, regular footstep sounds are non-existent. I am thrilled. The reason I gave 4 stars is that when I first called, the young man in customer service told me that we could install porcelain tile directly over the rubber underlayment rather than admit that he didn't know the answer. That is wrong. I would have much preferred that he said he didn't know.

I am very pleased with the product. I was worried about the smell of the recycled tires in the underlayment. However, I was surprised that the product did not smell at all. It is really a good quality product that you can feel good about purchasing.

Great product. Our bedroom is downstairs below the kitchen and living room where I installed the new flooring. This underlayment helped quiet the floor traffic significantly. Easy to use and very heavy duty. Thank you, Bryan in Winchester, Virginia.

We have finally completed our project! We used the 5mm Underlayment Roll with 1/2 inch tiles over. We also cut pieces of the 1/4 inch mat roll to shock absorb while using weights. It looks great & feels great! We are very happy with the product.
